How a jump start works

Describe what it does

Whether it cranks slowly, clicks once, clicks repeatedly or is completely dead tells us a lot before we set off.

02 / Start

Get it running

A booster pack is connected to the battery and the engine started, so you are mobile again rather than waiting on a recovery truck.

Find out why

We check the battery voltage and whether the alternator is charging once it is running, so you know if this is likely to happen again tomorrow.

When to call us out

It cranks slowly, or clicks and will not fire. The classic flat-battery symptoms, especially first thing on a cold morning.

Lights left on overnight. Headlights, interior lights or a boot light are enough to flatten a healthy battery by morning.

The car has been standing. A few weeks unused is often enough, particularly on a car with a lot of electronics drawing a standby current.

It keeps happening. Repeated failures to start point at a battery near the end of its life, or something draining it while the car is parked.

Worth knowing

A jump start is not a recharge. It gets the engine going. The battery still needs a decent run or a proper charger afterwards, or you will be in the same position next time.

Cold weather exposes a weak battery. Battery capacity falls as the temperature drops while the engine takes more effort to turn over, so a marginal battery tends to fail on the first cold morning.

If it dies the moment we disconnect, it is not the battery. That usually points at the alternator not charging, which is a garage job rather than a roadside one. We will tell you what we have found.
