Reading the numbers on your tyre sidewall
What the size, load and speed markings on a tyre mean.
Emergency line · 24 hours07549 398889The size marking
A marking such as 205/55 R16 91V breaks down as: 205 is the width in millimetres, 55 is the sidewall height as a percentage of the width, R means radial construction, and 16 is the wheel diameter in inches.
Load and speed
The 91 is the load index — the maximum weight each tyre can carry — and the V is the speed rating. Replacement tyres should meet or exceed both figures given in your handbook.
The date code
A four-digit code after "DOT" gives the week and year of manufacture, so 3224 means week 32 of 2024. It is worth knowing when buying part-worn tyres.
