Checking tyre pressure at home

How to find the right pressure for your car and check it with a basic gauge.

Find the right pressure first

The correct pressures for your car are printed on a sticker inside the driver's door frame, inside the fuel filler flap, or in the handbook. There are usually two sets: one for normal driving and one for a full load.

Check when the tyres are cold

Pressure rises as tyres warm up, so check before you drive or after the car has been parked for a few hours. Remove the valve cap, press the gauge on squarely, read it, and add or release air until it matches the sticker.

  • Check all four tyres and the spare if you have one.
  • Put the valve caps back on — they keep dirt out of the valve.
  • Recheck about once a month and before a long trip.
